i read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! it was a selfless act; i only did it to see if it was appropriate for my 8 year old daughter to read. somehow, i've managed to completely avoid all things Harry Potter since it came out in 1998. (remember 1998!? barely.) you've probably already read it or seen the movie by now, i know i'm wayyyy late to the Harry Potter party. but the truth is, i didn't really care about it and was perfectly happy living my Harry Potterless life.
but, my sweet girl is devouring books faster than the library can stock them. and i was checking old best-sellers lists trying to find new-to-her novels to satisfy my little bookworm. she isn't into wizards or witches or magic or hobbits, but she has a wonderful imagination and a hunger for stories and tall tales. the wilder, the better. her discernment is maturing, too, which is what made me wonder if perhaps she was ready for (and would enjoy) the Harry Potter series. she knows, because we've taught her all along, the difference between fiction and reality, fantasy and truth.
and i decided that my daughter is definitely mature enough to read the series, book by book, after i finish each one. and then, i'm looking forward to curling up with my big girl on the couch and watching the movies together, jumping out of our skin when we see He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.
have you read Harry Potter? seen the movies? i'd love to know what you think!
