Just Beachy

they ate cheese puffs and got to watch movies in the car. but they had no idea where we were headed.

it was a long, long, long drive but they did great. all 7 of them. Bubba was our Official Train Spotter.

when we finally arrived, they couldn't believe their eyes! ocean, waves, sand, seashells! SURPRISE!

the weather man gave us a 60 percent chance of rain. BUT GOD answered our prayers and gave us 100 percent sunshine.

their faces were sunkissed. their friendships were strengthened.

they will always remember this summer surprise trip to the beach.

Ten on Tuesday: Bad Words

yall know i'm big on choosing my words and speaking love and all that jazz, right?

i am a word nerd and i firmly believe that words have the power to kill, and words have the power to give life; they're either poison or fruit, and the speaker has the choice of what kind of words to speak. (Proverbs 18:21) that simple truth carries over into every aspect of my life.

just as i am big on words, my Hubby is big on creating positive energy. one of the first things he taught me is that negative energy breeds negative energy and positive energy breeds positive energy. try it - it's true. and it carries over into every aspect of his life.

together, we are a force to be reckoned with.

and as parents, it's made a major impact on the way our children behave and speak.

without much effort at all, we have managed to "ban" these words -AND the emotions/attitudes attached to them- in our home. our kids don't say them, we don't say them, and we don't watch or listen to TV, movies or radio that uses them.

they may not be 4-letters but in our home, these are Bad Words:

1. Stupid/Idiot/Dumb
2. Hate
3. Bored/Boring
4. Fat/Chunky (as describing a person)
5. Shut Up
6. Kill
7. Scary
8. Monster/Ghost
9. Can't
10. Impossible

what words are Bad Words in your home? why?

i have a secret

and i can't contain it any longer!

i've been keeping this secret for a few weeks, talking in code to the few people that know about it. i've been packing our suitcases in the darkest corner of my closet and dodging questions like "Mom, where is my favorite orange tank top?"

the kids don't understand why - but are thoroughly enjoying - extra QT with Daddy this weekend because what they don't know is...

Mama's taking them to Matagorda!

this is the first trip i've taken with the kids without hubby, and really it's the first time i've felt capable confident enough to do it. i won't be completely alone, though. {thank God!} two of my best Mom Friends and their kids are making the trip with us. together, we can do anything! how is this so different than loading them up and taking them to the zoo for the day? it's really the same, just....bigger. {psyching myself up here.}

three moms. seven kids. six hours in the car.

i'll let you know how it goes ;)

Mommy & Me Monday: 7/26

we took BigGirl to see Ramona and Beezus this weekend. it was a total surprise- she had no idea where we were going and didn't even know what movie we were seeing until the opening title appeared on the screen. she was completely surprised and thrilled to see her favorite book characters come to life on the big screen.

she has read 3 books in the Ramona series and they are her current favorite chapter books. we loved that the movie showed scenes from the books. it was really neat seeing in action what we'd read and only imagined. Ramona is just as cute and mischevious in the movie as in the book. Beezus comes across as less annoying in the movie, i thought. and i was really happy with all of the relationship dynamics- Ramona and Aunt Bea (who reminded me SO MUCH of Kristin), Howie and Ramona, Mrs. Meecham and Ramona, and Mr. and Mrs. Q. really a cute movie with a happy ending {BigGirl's favorite part was the end scene} and no bad words! the weekend AND the movie get two thumbs up from this Mama!

oh, and Bubba's face? that's his new "say cheese" pose. nice.

the bookstore

one of my favorite places to see my children's differences magnified is the bookstore.
BigGirl pours over books, silent and still.
Bubba finds the novelty toys, is noisy and busy.
She likes the silky smooth pages, the smell of crisp paper.
He likes the shiny animated things, the motion and sound.
She will stay.
He will go.
But they never want to leave
the bookstore.

summer candy

(i just realized how much i love those two words: summer and candy. yum!)

so i walked into my friend's kitchen and the first thing i saw was this beautiful, colorful candy bowl sitting on her countertop. i was drawn to it.

naturally, i wanted to reach in and grab a piece. truth be told, i wanted to taste one of every color.

except, that's not candy. it's a good thing i realized that before popping one in my mouth. that would have been embarrassing.

"it's just a little something we're doing this summer..." my friend said. but i knew it was not just a little something. you aren't a mom of 3 with a crystal candy bowl on your countertop filled with brightly colored bits of paper and call it "just a little something." so i bugged her about it until she told me what it was.

"every morning the kids take turns picking a piece of paper out of the bowl. written on the paper is an activity, and whatever it says, we make a point to do that day."

i couldn't resist. i peeked.

BRILLIANT, right?

my bugging-her technique worked because then, when she saw me taking pictures of her "summer candy" she emailed me the list of activities that inspired her to do this.

the activities are simple things that you can do around the house, or fairly easy and inexpensive outings. they can be modified, though- you can make up your own! and you can adjust the activities for your children's ages. i love it. and i'm not so sure it has to be a summer thing. why not have a candy bowl out year-round?

of course i knew i HAD to share this with you, my friends!

this is the list of activities. print, cut them out and toss them into your own candy bowl, or get creative and make up your own activities!

(click to open, print. or right click, save.)

it's summertime! make the most of it!

need even more inspiration for summer boredom busters? i especially like the craft projects and books recommended by NoTimeForFlashcards.

Mommy & Me Monday: 7/19

Bubba loves a sprayground. I was laying on a towel in the grass watching him play with his sister and their friends. Every so often he would stop splashing in the water, run over to me, and lay his wet little body down right next to me. I snapped a picture [using the super cool front-side camera on my new iPhone.]

Another fun weekend: playing on the playground, eating gelato, and listening to live music. DaddyHall took a few photos of me with Bubba rockin out to a cover band that reminded me of The Culps on SNL but I forgot to get them off of his iPhone. Really, I was there. All weekend!

PS Even though my Mommy & Me Mondays have been pictures of me with Bubba, Big Girl is with us everywhere we go...she is just too busy to pose in a photo with mom. :)

I am inspired by Krystyn (Really, Are You Serious?) to take pictures of me with my kids and link up with her on Mommy & Me Mondays.

Mommy & Me Monday: 7/12

we had a very busy and fun-filled week. Bubba's 2nd birthday was Thursday. the celebrating began on Wednesday and carried on until Saturday. between my mom, my mother-in-law, and myself, more than 500 pictures were taken in a matter of 4 days. sadly, i'm only in a handful of them. but i promise i was there!

i am kind of embarrassed by this picture, only because our costumes are so elementary. dressing like cows for free Chick-Fil-A was a last-minute thing and i only had 1 piece of black felt to make cow spots. i vowed to do better next year.

one of our favorite places to go with out of town visitors is the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. the Da Vinci exhibit that is there now is so neat. he really was a brilliant man. this is the Mirror Room, in which Bubba was thoroughly confused.

this is just a brief glimpse of the fun we had celebrating Bubba's birthday with family.

why my clouds have silver linings

i haven't always been able to see my glass half-full. i haven't always given people the benefit of the doubt. i haven't always been this forgiving, loving, giving, happy. i haven't always worn these rose-colored glasses, and my clouds certainly haven't always had silver linings.

i've dealt with junk. i have an enemy. i get my fair share of bad days and yucky situations. there are times when i feel empty, guilty, alone, downcast, helpless, hopeless. i have darkness in my past that sometimes tries to creep up and remind me of my failures. i face mountains sometimes. some days it feels like there is a giant standing over me, ready to pound me face-down into the dirt.

but you'll rarely hear me complain. i'm not a complainer [anymore].

i wear rose-colored glasses when i fight my battles. i can spin a very negative situation into something positive in no time flat.

when my father-in-law passed away last spring, i was an emotional mess. but somehow, my heart found something happy and sent it to my thoughts, which then came pouring out of my mouth as i said to my mourning husband, "Your Dad got to eat lunch at his favorite restaurant with his buddies every single day! What a great life!" i was miserable but i found something positive and encouraging to say.

i'm not hiding my emotions. i'm not burying my true feelings anywhere. what's happening here is i'm choosing my words. my dark, stormy rain clouds are lined simply by the silver shiney words that come out of my mouth. if i say it, i can feel it. if i feel it, i can believe it. if i believe it, that changes everything.

"Our words are a reflection of what we are looking for in people, circumstances, and life." -Sharon Jaynes, The Power of a Woman's Words

how can i do this? how can i be like David for every Goliath? why does it seem like everything is always great with me? how can i be such an encourager? why do i find light in the darkness? the Bible tells me so.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. -Psalm 19:14

The Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. -Isaiah 50:4

The tongue is a fire, the very world if iniquity. -James 3:6

The acts of the sinful nature are obvious...hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage...envy...and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. -Galatians 5:19-23

A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words cause quarrels. -Proverbs 15:1

Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. -Proverbs 15:4

The tongue can bring death or life... -Proverbs 18:21

my clouds have silver linings because i decided they would. no, it doesn't take away the bad days or guarantee 100% complete happiness. but it sure helps! i smile when i think about my Father-in-Law enjoying lunch at his favorite restaurant with his buddies every single day. God is with me, His promises hold true, and i choose to follow His teaching. it's a choice i make every moment. i choose to speak life. i choose to be an encourager. i choose to use my words to shape my world.

my words are like coffee- strong and bold, yummy, helpful, energizing, fueling, fragrant, desirable. i love coffee. but without a filter, coffee is bitter and harsh, not drinkable, gritty, dark, yuck.

i pray.
"Lord, put a filter over my mouth so my words will be pleasant to hear, encouraging to others and to myself. help me to always check with You before i speak. amen."
if you want more silver-lined clouds in your life, i highly recommend you read Sharon Jaynes' book "The Power of a Woman's Words," as well as Marilyn Hickey's pocket book "Speak the Word." there are also lots of resources online; just search "scripture about words we speak."

try it.

Mommy & Me Monday

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon Serious Krystyn at Really, Are You Serious? and it was blog love at first sight. Call me old fashioned but I love a good ole Mommy Blog. One of my favorite things about Krystyn's blog is Mommy & Me Monday. Haven't we all had a nagging feeling of invisible-ness when we're looking back at photos of our children and we realize we're in NONE of them?! Haven't we all begged someone to take our picture with our kids just to prove that Mommy was there? Well, Krystyn and I have that in common. "Too often, we are the ones behind the camera instead of in the pictures. We capture all of the moments with our kiddos, but almost none with us," she says. Amen, sister! Krystyn's challenge? Take at least one picture of yourself with your children and post it on Mondays, dedicated as Mommy and Me Monday. I'm up for the challenge! Because I am here, enjoying these precious moments with my children, and not just from behind the camera.

Mommy and Me Monday at Really, Are You Serious?

Do you want to exist in the scrapbooks and photo albums? Yeah! Join Serious Krystyn (and me) for Mommy & Me Monday.

For my 1st Mommy & Me Monday I have pictures from this weekend. We went to Oklahoma City to visit with Grandpa Hall, and celebrate his 90th birthday. It rained the entire time we were there. The kids and I waited in the hotel room, supposed to be napping, before Grandpa's birthday party. It was too exciting to nap. We (I) started going stir-crazy and had to get out of the hotel room before we clawed the walls. Thank God for the bookstore across the street! The kids and I walked there, in the rain, and spent an hour reading and playing in the bookstore. My kids love reading, and playing with the trinkets and toys at the bookstore. We had a great time. And SEE? I was there!

Thanks again to Krystyn for hosting Mommy & Me Monday!
